This is a subject what I think is very important to address because day by day we meet more and more clients who are requesting us to take their hair from black to platinum blonde or from dark to any pastel colour in one go.
Well, I just want to give you guys a clear view on what is possible and what is unrealistic.
Unfortunately, most of the Instagram and Facebook before and after photos are not helping at all, as you can’t see all the steps were taken to achieve those results.
I must say this is definitely the fault of us, the Hairdressers in Maroubra who are posting photos without explaining or better of showing the in between results.
Also many of them use filters and some photos are modified with different softwares.
I do not believe in any way filtering or modifying results at all.
What is realistic then, you could ask….
Let me explain…
To get a platinum blonde or all those high fashioned pastels and greys your base colour needs to be white…I mean WHITE as it can get.
If your natural base is blonde and you keep your hair mainly blonde then we do not have a problem… but in any other cases we would face with different challenges.
Say your hair is natural brown/black (virgin hair, did not have artificial colour on it) and in a very good condition then we might can get you to a nice light blonde in one go, but might not going to be pale enough for pastels or greys so you would need to consider another session before your hair is ready for it.
If your hair had been coloured, bleached, re-coloured multiple times, then we have a challenge and you must understand that we can push your hair only a very limited way.
We will need to cut trough artificial colour (lucky if is professionally done in the past, and not so lucky if it was a box colour what you have used over time), make sure during this process your hair is protected from multiple damages.
Yes, we do have bond re-builders to keep it safer but those are not miracle products either. So in this case, your result is strongly depends the quality of your hair when we start, how much your hair can take during the session.
It is very unlikely that you will get those pastel /platinum results in one or two session. it will be a longer term plan more likely a 6-12 months plan.
Khloe Kardashian is a very good example for that.
Just have a look at the photo of her hair history, you can clearly see, that she went trough stages before she got really blonde?
I assure you, you still can look really good with the between colours too. It can be fun each time and your hair still will be healthy and strong.
I know, now you would ask…So how long need to be between sessions?
Well there is no right answer here, it depends on your hair and how do you look after it between sessions. You will need to give a break to your hair so it can recover and ready for another go.
I strongly believe, it is only worth to have a fashion colour if we can keep you hair healthy in the same time and a hairdresser should be able to say NO, if it is not safe.
Also you need to understand that it is a huge commitment, you need to budget for maintenance every 3-4 weeks, also invest in good home care products too and be prepared a few changes the way you will need to treat hair. For example, if we bleached your hair and it is getting dryer, you will need to get some deep moisturising in salon treatment, make sure you wont swim for a while as salt can eat your hair away.
You will need to use sulphate an paraben free products and so on.
